It might look like an easy step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a strong working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his writing process ~600 percent by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same process for every new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, because I know the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I had actually planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so I put the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea about what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time because I’d put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I often put off these things till I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and study process by using this template. It is a more productive part of my process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
