It might seem like an easy step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a strong working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600% by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same process for every single new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, since I understand the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I had actually planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time because I’d set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally work, and I had been tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I often put off these things until I am drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It is a more effective part of my procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
