It might seem to be an easy step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a solid working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his writing process ~600% by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same process for every single new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, because I understand the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I’d really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so I set off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time since I had put myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I often put off these things till I’m drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve really coined my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of my procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
