It may look to be a simple step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a strong working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his writing process ~600% by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same process for every new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, because I understand the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had actually planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea about what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time since I’d put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and that I was tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I often put these things off until I am drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have really overhauled my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It is a more effective part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
