It may seem to be an easy step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a solid working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600% by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same process for every single new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, because I know the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I had actually planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea about what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time because I’d put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to how I normally work, and that I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I frequently put off these things until I am drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and research process by applying this template. It is a more effective part of the procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
