It may seem to be a simple step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a solid working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his composing process ~600% by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same process for every new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line with a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, because I understand the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I had really planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so I set the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time because I’d set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I often put these things off till I’m drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve really coined my outline and study process by using this template. It’s a more productive part of my procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
