It may seem like a simple step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a strong working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his composing procedure ~600% by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same process for every single new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, because I know the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d actually planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so that I put the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea of what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time because I’d set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and I had been tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I often put these things off till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and study process by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
