It may look like an easy step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a strong working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his composing process ~600 percent by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same procedure for every new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, since I understand the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had actually planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so that I put off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea of what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time because I had put myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I frequently put these things off till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of my process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
