It might seem like a simple step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a strong working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his composing process ~600 percent by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same procedure for every single new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line with a few notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, since I understand the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had actually planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so that I set the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea about what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time because I had set myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally work, and that I was tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put off these things till I am drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It is a more effective part of my process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
