It may seem like an easy step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a solid working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his composing procedure ~600% by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same process for every single new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, because I understand the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I had actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time since I had set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put these things off till I’m drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more effective part of my procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
