It may look like a simple step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a strong working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600% by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line using a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, because I know the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had really planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so I set the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea about what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time since I’d put myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off till I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have really overhauled my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It is a more productive part of the process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
