It might look to be a simple step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a solid working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his writing process ~600% by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same procedure for every new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, because I understand the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had really planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so I set the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea of what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time since I had put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and that I was tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off until I am drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve really coined my outline and study procedure by using this template. It’s a more effective part of my process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
