It may seem to be an easy step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a solid working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same process for every new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, because I know the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I had actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so I set off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time since I’d set myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I often put off these things till I’m drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of the process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
