It might look like an easy step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a strong working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same process for every new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line with a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, because I know the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d really planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so I put the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time since I’d put myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to how I normally work, and I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I often put off these things till I am drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have really overhauled my outline and research process by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of my procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
