It may look like an easy step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a strong working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his writing process ~600% by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same process for every single new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line with a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, because I know the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I’d really planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so I set off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea about what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time because I’d put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put these things off until I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and study procedure by using this template. It is a more effective part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
