It might seem to be an easy step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a solid working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his composing process ~600 percent by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same process for every new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line using a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, since I know the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so I set the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea of what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time since I’d put myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally work, and I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I frequently put off these things until I am drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have actually coined my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of my process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
