It might look like a simple step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a strong working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his composing process ~600 percent by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same process for every single new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, since I know the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I’d actually planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea about what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time since I had set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I often put these things off until I’m drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and research process by applying this template. It is a more productive part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
