It may look to be an easy step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a solid working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same procedure for every new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point using a few notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, because I know the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I had actually planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so I put off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea about what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time because I’d put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have really overhauled my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of my procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
