It might look to be an easy step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a strong working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing process ~600 percent by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same procedure for every new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, since I know the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d actually planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so I put the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea of what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time because I had set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I frequently put off these things until I am drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and research process by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
