It might seem like a simple step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a solid working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his writing process ~600% by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same process for every new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, because I know the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so that I set off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time since I’d set myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally work, and that I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I often put these things off till I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and research process by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of the procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
