It may seem to be an easy step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a strong working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his writing process ~600 percent by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, because I know the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had actually planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so I put the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea of what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time since I’d put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I frequently put off these things until I am drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have really coined my outline and study procedure by using this template. It’s a more effective part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
