It may seem like a simple step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a strong working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his writing process ~600 percent by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same process for every new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line with a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, since I know the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I had really planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so that I set off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time because I had set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally work, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I often put off these things until I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have actually coined my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
