It might seem like a simple step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a strong working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing process ~600 percent by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same process for every new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line using a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, since I know the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so I put the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time since I’d set myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and that I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I often put these things off till I am drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of the procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
