It may look like a simple step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a solid working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same process for every single new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, because I know the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had actually planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so that I set the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time because I had set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally work, and I was tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I often put these things off until I am drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve really coined my outline and research procedure by using this template. It’s a more effective part of my process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
