It may look to be a simple step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a strong working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his writing process ~600 percent by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, since I understand the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d actually planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so that I put the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea of what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time because I’d put myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and I was tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put these things off until I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and study process by using this template. It’s a more productive part of my procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
