It might seem like a simple step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a strong working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600 percent by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every single new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, since I know the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had actually planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so I put off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea about what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time because I had set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and I was tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I often put these things off till I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It is a more productive part of my process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
