It may look to be a simple step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a strong working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600% by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same procedure for every single new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I’d really planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so I put the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea of what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time because I had put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and I was tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I often put off these things till I’m drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and study process by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
