It might look like a simple step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a solid working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his composing process ~600 percent by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line with a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, because I understand the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so I set off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea about what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time because I’d set myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I frequently put off these things until I’m drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more productive part of the process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
