It might look like a simple step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a strong working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same procedure for every new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, because I know the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so that I put off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time because I had set myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off until I’m drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
