return address label template
It may look like an easy step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a solid working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his writing process ~600% by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same procedure for every single new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line using a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, since I understand the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d really planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so I put the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea of what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time since I had put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I frequently put these things off until I am drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have really coined my outline and study process by using this template. It’s a more effective part of my process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
