It may seem to be an easy step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a strong working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every single new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, because I understand the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d actually planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so that I set off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea of what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time because I’d put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things until I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and research process by using this template. It is a more effective part of my procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
