It might look like a simple step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a solid working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his writing process ~600 percent by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, because I understand the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so that I put the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea of what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time since I’d put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and that I was tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things till I’m drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and study process by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of the process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
