It might look like an easy step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a solid working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his composing process ~600 percent by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same process for every new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, because I understand the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I had actually planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so I set off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea of what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time because I’d set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I was tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I frequently put off these things till I’m drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It is a more productive part of the process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
