It might seem like an easy step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a solid working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing process ~600 percent by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same procedure for every single new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line with a few notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, because I understand the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so I put off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time since I had set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and I was tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I frequently put these things off until I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and research process by using this template. It is a more productive part of my procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
