It may look like a simple step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a solid working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing process ~600% by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same process for every new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, since I understand the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d actually planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so that I put the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea of what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time because I had put myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things until I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve really coined my outline and study process by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of my procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
