It might look like a simple step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a solid working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his composing process ~600% by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same process for every new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line using a few notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, since I know the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had really planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so I set the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea about what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time since I had put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I often put off these things till I’m drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of the process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
