It might seem like a simple step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a solid working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his writing process ~600% by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same procedure for every single new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, since I know the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so that I put the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea of what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time because I had set myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I often put these things off until I am drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more productive part of my process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
