It may look to be a simple step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a solid working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his writing procedure ~600 percent by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, since I understand the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so I put the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea of what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time because I’d set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and I was tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I often put these things off until I’m drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve really coined my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It is a more effective part of the procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
