It may look like a simple step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a solid working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his writing process ~600 percent by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same process for every single new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, because I understand the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea of what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time because I had put myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I often put these things off till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more effective part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
