It might look to be a simple step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a strong working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600% by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every single new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point using a few notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, since I understand the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so that I set the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea of what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time because I had put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally work, and I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off until I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have really coined my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
