It may seem to be a simple step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a solid working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his writing procedure ~600 percent by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every single new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line using a few notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, since I know the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d really planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so that I set off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea of what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and I was tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I often put these things off till I’m drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of my procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
