It may seem to be an easy step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a strong working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600% by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same process for every single new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, since I understand the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so I set off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time because I had put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I often put these things off until I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of my procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
