It might seem to be an easy step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a solid working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing process ~600% by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same procedure for every new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point using a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, since I understand the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had actually planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so that I put the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time because I’d set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and that I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I often put these things off until I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have really overhauled my outline and research process by applying this template. It is a more effective part of the process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
