It might look to be a simple step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a strong working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600% by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same procedure for every new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, since I know the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d really planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so I set off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time since I had put myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I often put these things off until I am drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have really overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It’s a more effective part of the process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
