It might look like a simple step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a solid working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his writing procedure ~600 percent by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same process for every new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, since I understand the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I’d really planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so I put the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea of what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time since I had put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I often put off these things until I’m drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have really coined my outline and study procedure by using this template. It is a more effective part of the procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
