It might look like an easy step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a solid working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600 percent by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same procedure for every single new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line with a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, because I know the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I had really planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so that I put the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time since I had set myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and I was tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I often put these things off until I am drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more productive part of the procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
