It may seem like an easy step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a solid working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same procedure for every single new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, because I know the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d actually planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so I put the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea about what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time because I had put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things until I’m drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more productive part of the procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
