It might look to be a simple step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a strong working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600% by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same procedure for every single new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, since I know the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so that I put the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea about what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time because I had set myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put these things off until I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of the procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
