It might look to be a simple step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a strong working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing process ~600 percent by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, since I know the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea of what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time because I’d set myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally work, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I frequently put off these things till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more effective part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
