It may look to be a simple step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a strong working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his composing process ~600 percent by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same process for every new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, because I know the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d actually planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so I put the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put off these things till I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and research procedure by using this template. It is a more effective part of the procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
